The Me First short story competition is open to entries from Jan 1st – September 18th, 2020. Genres don’t matter. As long as the story is fiction in first person perspective we want to read it. Please use standard manuscript formatting in a docx., doc., or rtf. file, and don’t go over 6,500 words.
Simultaneous submissions and previously published works are not permitted for the contest. We ask for First Rights to publish on our website and a potential anthology.
Everyone’s work will be judged based on:
- Technical skills – Grammar, structure, and style
- Originality – Is this the same old story or something fresh and new?
- Characterization – Make us fall in love with your characters, or hate them
- World building – Was the story built and described in a world we can imagine?
- Plot – We need a solid beginning, middle, and end…or at least a climax if you’re playing with new structures to dazzle us

3rd place will get a free short story critique up to 6,500 words detailing strengths and weaknesses, AND a framed winner’s certificate.
2nd place will get a free short story edit up to 6,500 words with full red marks and suggestions, a Me First Mag bookmark, AND a framed winner’s certificate.
1st place will get a free novel edit up to 100,000 words (Yes a full novel – or equivalent short story collection! If you have it, we’re ready to help it get ready for the world. Consider us your fairy book godmothers and godfathers), a Me First Mag coffee mug, a Me First Mag bookmark, AND a framed winner’s certificate.
All winners and honorable mentions are also entitled to bragging rights. (But that’s a given)
Fees: Single entries are $5 / A double entry (2 stories per author) is $8 / A triple entry (3 stories per author) is $10
No more than 3 stories per author will be accepted. Sure upping the odds is great but we’d also like to give everyone a fair shot at winning.

We will reply with a confirmation of receipt of payment and entry (All unpaid entries will be disqualified). Please put “Competition Entry” in the subject line and address it, “To the judges” in the body of your email.
Winners will be announced on our publication’s anniversary, December 12th.
